Healthy-Salsa

Why is Salsa a Healthy Choice?

If you're in the mood for a snack, there's no shortage of options you can choose. However, all of those choices are far from being equal. That's just as true for taste as it is for how good or bad a specific snack is for your body. If you're looking for something that's going to make your taste buds very happy without being bad for the rest of your body, salsa is a great choice. Heart Healthy Garlic and onions are two key ingredients of great salsa. In addition to the flavor they bring to salsa, they're also good for your heart. That's because these ingredients act as blood thinners. By functioning to help prevent blood clots, both ingredients can play a role in lowering the risk of heart attack or stroke. Studies have also linked garlic and onions to lower levels of bad cholesterol, as well as increased good cholesterol levels. Protect Against Inflammation Another reason that garlic and onions are heart healthy ingredients is they have anti-inflammatory properties. Those properties extend beyond just helping the heart and also impact symptoms of conditions like arthritis or asthma in a positive way. Jalapeños can also combat many symptoms of arthritis. That's thanks to them containing capsaicin, which has the ability to release endorphins that relieve pain and increase circulation. Lots of Antioxidants Even though diseases can take many different forms, a common link is free radicals causing mutations at the cellular level. One way to help prevent this type of unwanted change is with antioxidants. When you eat salsa, you get a number of ingredients that are quite rich in antioxidants. Those ingredients include garlic and onions, as well as tomatoes and cilantro. What's great about getting antioxidants from different sources is it increases the total number of positive effects. The ingredients listed above contain over half a dozen antioxidants that benefit multiple systems throughout the body. Choose Your Salsa Wisely While there are a number of reasons why salsa is a healthy choice, it's important to note that those benefits only go along with salsa that's made from real ingredients. If a salsa is made with lots of artificial flavors or packed with preservatives, it's not going to be anywhere near as healthy of a choice. The same is true for not tasting all that great. If you want a salsa that's both healthy and absolutely delicious, Mama Flasch's is the salsa for you. Every jar that we make is produced from a small batch recipe. Our all-natural salsas showcase the fresh, high-quality vegetables used to make them. And because we want you to have a salsa that's perfect for your taste buds' preferences, we offer mild, medium and hot blends.

What to Do with Leftover Salsa

At Mama Flasch’s, we’re all pretty crazy about salsa! Since we eat a lot of salsa and are always trying out new combinations, it’s pretty common for us to end up with multiple jars open at the same time. Since fresh ingredients are one of the things that make our salsas so delicious, we like being able to eat and use individual jars in a timely manner.   So whether you have some leftover salsa that you want to use as soon as possible or are simply looking for some delicious new ways to enjoy salsa, we have seven different uses to share with you:   We’ve actually got two delicious suggestions for breakfast. The first is an easy way to take your grits to the next level. Spoon some salsa into a batch of cooked grits, then finish off this mix with cheese and bacon for total deliciousness. And if you’re more of an egg person, leftover salsa goes great with frittatas, omelets or scrambled eggs.   Salsa compound butter! Simply mix your salsa with softened butter and then put it in the refrigerator. While there are a number of ways to use this delicious butter, our favorite is grilling a steak and then putting thin butter slices on top.   You can give meat a delicious new taste by using leftover salsa as a marinade. To get the best results from this kind of mixture, we recommend adding a little canola oil and lime juice to the salsa before you start marinating your meat of choice.   Leftover salsa works great for giving béchamel sauce (white sauce) a new twist. You make this type of sauce with butter, all-purpose flour, milk, salt and nutmeg. Once the sauce is ready, add leftover salsa to taste. You can then toss this mixture with your favorite type of pasta.   If you’re planning a meal that’s going to include fries as a side, simply mix some ketchup and/or mayo with your leftover salsa for a delicious dip that provides a little extra punch.   Another use we’ve found that works really well is adding an awesome flavor to rice. After cooking a batch of rice, just stir in whatever salsa you have leftover. You can finish off the rice with some cheddar cheese and olives.   Gazpacho is a delicious type of soup that originated in Andalusia and remains very popular throughout the rest of Spain. You can easily puree up a batch by combining leftover salsa along with vegetable stock, jalapeños, cucumbers and tomatoes.   Now that we’ve shared what we like to do with leftover salsa, it’s your turn! Head over to our salsa stories page and let us know your favorite thing to do with any leftover salsa.
Guacamole Dip

3 Original Dip Recipes from Mama Flasch

When you buy a jar of Mama Flasch’s salsa, you’re getting farm fresh ingredients that have been perfectly mixed to produce a truly great flavor. And depending on how much heat you like from your salsa, you also get to choose whether you want mild, medium or hot.   One of the traits that makes our salsa unique is we try to make the most of every single ingredient. For example, instead of adding sugar or tons of salt, we spend a lot of time figuring out how to derive the flavors we want from fresh ingredients.   Because we spend a lot of time experimenting with flavors and trying out many different ways people may want to enjoy our salsas, we end up developing some really great recipes that include our salsa. If you’re ever hosting guests at home or need something delicious to take to an event, we’ve got three original dip recipes that will be a hit. Simply pair with your favorite brand of chips and watch everyone enjoy all the tastiness!   Guacamole   This recipe uses 1 ripe avocado, 1/2 lime and 1/2 cup of any Mama Flasch’s salsa. You’ll want to mash the avocado and juice the 1/2 lime, then add them to the 1/2 cup of salsa. While this guacamole is quite tasty to start eating right away, we prefer to chill it for 30 minutes and then enjoy.   Quick 4-Layered Dip   Even though the end result looks like a lot of work, our 4-layered dip is a breeze to make. You’ll need 1 8-oz can of refried beans, 1 8-oz container of sour cream, 1 pack of taco seasoning, 1/2 jar of Mama Flasch’s salsa and 1 cup of cheddar cheese. Mix the sour cream and taco seasoning together. Then in an 8x8 square pan, evenly spread the refried beans, then the sour cream and taco seasoning, followed by the salsa and topped with the cheddar cheese. This dip tastes just as great served chilled as it does warm.   Quick Queso   Cut 8 ounces of Velveeta into a few cubes, then mix with 1/2 jar of Mama Flasch’s salsa. Cover the mix and heat in the microwave for 35-45 seconds. Take it out and stir, then cover before heating for another 35-45 seconds. This dip will be ready to eat and makes a perfect snack at any time. We’d love to hear what you think once you’ve had a chance to try one of our dips. You can use our salsa stories page to send us your thoughts. And if you have your own dip recipe that you’d like us to share with others, you can send it through that page as well.
Homemade Tortilla Chips

Easily Make Homemade Tortilla Chips for a Christmas Party

Whenever you order chips at a restaurant, it only takes one bite to know if they make the chips from scratch. While there's nothing wrong with enjoying tortilla chips from a store bought brand, they simply can't compete with the delicious flavor and crunch of freshly made ones. Although homemade tortilla chips will impress anyone who tries them, we want to share a little secret with you. The secret is it's much easier to make these chips from scratch than most people realize. So if you're planning to bring chips to a holiday party with friends, co-workers or family, we want to show you how easy it is to impress everyone's taste buds with homemade chips: What You Need One of the reasons that making these chips from scratch is easier than you likely expect is doing so only requires three ingredients. Those ingredients are corn tortillas, salt and oil. Corn, canola or grapeseed oil will all work great. How to Make Them Since there's a good chance you already have the ingredients you need, we're going to dive right into the process of making a batch of homemade chips. The classic approach is to fry the tortillas in a little oil. You can prep the tortillas in less than 10 minutes and then fry them all in 15. The first step to prepare the tortillas for frying is to dry them out. You can do this by leaving them out for awhile, microwaving them or putting the tortillas in the oven. Once the tortillas are dry, cut each one into six triangle shaped wedges. This will give you 72 chips if you fry a dozen tortillas. The last step to prepare for frying is to heat the oil. When you start frying, you'll want to keep every batch of chips in the oil for around 2 minutes. Then you can pull the chips out with tongs, place them on a paper towel (either on a plate or in a bowl), sprinkle a little salt and then place a paper towel on top for the next batch. In terms of when to make the chips, the closer to when the party you're going to is starting, the better! The Perfect Way to Serve Homemade Chips By following the simple instructions above, you’ll be able to quickly and easily make absolutely delicious homemade tortilla chips. Because chips made from scratch are so good, you’re going to want something equally delicious to serve them with. That’s where Mama Flasch’s salsa comes into the picture. Our Gregular™/Mild, Scottsome Heat™ /Medium and InCindyary™/Hot Salsas are all made from fresh ingredients that pack a lot of flavor. And if you aren’t sure how much heat people are going to want with their chips, our salsa combo pack is the ideal way to offer the perfect option for everyone at the party!
Mama Flasch Christmas Basket

How to Make An Awesome Food Lover’s Christmas Basket

Although Christmas is right around the corner, there's still time to find great gifts for anyone you have left on your list. If one or more of those people love food, you can give them a very memorable gift. The specific type of gift we're talking about is a Christmas basket. Not only can you fill this basket with goodies the recipient will absolutely love, but they'll also appreciate the thought that went into putting this gift together. Because the sheer number of options available for this type of gift can be overwhelming, we want to share a handful of useful tips for focusing in on exactly what a food lover will enjoy the most: Choose the Theme One of the best ways to narrow down your options and focus on what someone will enjoy the most is to come up with a theme for their basket. Two possible examples are for someone who loves cooking at home or is into DIY projects. The former basket can include spices and other ingredients along with a couple of kitchen gadgets, while the latter will be best with lots of snacks that can be enjoyed during projects. Provide Items with Multiple Uses Since you want the basket you put together to be a fun and delicious treat, items that can be used in different ways are great choices. Our salsa is the perfect example of this type of item. In addition to their most obvious use, marinade, salad dressing, soup base, guacamole and cocktail sauce substitute are all additional ways to use Mama Flasch’s salsa. Mix Old Favorites and New Discoveries One question that may cross your mind as you're deciding on items for a Christmas food basket is whether you should go with things you already know someone loves or experiment with new items that seem like they'll be a good fit for that person’s taste buds. The answer to that question is to do a little of both. Using a combination of treats from both categories will help create the most delicious basket possible. Use the Right Type of Basket Even though it’s easy to put all your focus on what’s going in your basket, remember that the container itself is going to make the gift’s first impression and set the tone for what someone thinks about it. While a fairly traditional basket may be the perfect choice for some themes, don’t be afraid to get creative. A quick scroll through Pinterest or Google Images is an easy way to get very inspired. By choosing a theme, providing items with multiple uses, mixing old favorites & new discoveries and using the right type of basket, you can create a Christmas basket that any food lover on your list will absolutely love!

The Top 7 Health Benefits of Tomatoes

At Mama Flasch’s, we’re very proud of the fact that we use fresh ingredients. Tomatoes are at the core of all the salsas we make. In addition to providing great flavor, the fresh tomatoes we use in all of our salsas offer some very real health benefits. Since it’s surprising just how many different benefits tomatoes have to offer, we want to share seven of the most notable with you: Numerous Vitamins and Minerals A big part of why tomatoes are so healthy for you is because they’re packed with many elements that are very good for your body. Vitamins found in tomatoes include A, K, C, B1, B3, B5, B6 and B7. This vegetable also has a number of healthy minerals, including phosphorus, chromium, iron, zinc, folate, magnesium, and potassium. Heart Disease Reducer As they shared in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers at Tufts and Boston University found that among subjects who got the highest amount of lycopene (which tomatoes happen to be rich in) on a regular basis, their risk of having cardiovascular disease was cut by a full thirty percent. Improved Digestion When your digestive system is working at its best, your whole body feels better. That’s why it’s great to know that tomatoes support healthy digestion. If you want to really maximize this benefit, you should get in the habit of eating spinach salads and topping them with salsa. Gallbladder and Kidney Stone Prevention This is tied to the previous benefit of supporting healthy digestion. By doing that, tomatoes are also able to play a central role in preventing the development of both gallbladder and kidney stones. Healthy Skin and Hair Vitamin A plays a key part in the maintenance and repair of vital skin tissue. And Vitamin K is really beneficial. Thanks to the fact that tomatoes are rich in both of these vitamins, they can help you look your best. And between looking great and all the other ways tomatoes help your body, you’ll also feel your best! Strong Immune System Because we’ve covered the fact that tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C and a number of other important nutrients, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that consuming this vegetable on a regular basis will help you maintain a strong immune system. Supports Eye Health Last but certainly not least is the benefits that tomatoes provide in terms of vision. Although carrots are often the first vegetable that people think of in relation to eye health, several of the vitamins and minerals that tomatoes are rich with,  directly support healthy eyes. If you want to reap all the benefits that tomatoes have to offer in the most delicious way possible, be sure to give our tasty mild, medium or hot salsa a try!

5 Delicious and Healthy Ways to Use Salsa

Salsa is something we spend a lot of time thinking about. One of the things we think about is different ways people can enjoy our delicious salsas. Since our salsas are made from farm fresh ingredients, they have some health benefits you simply won’t find in other dips or condiments. Specifically, our salsas are low calorie, fat-free and don’t have any sugar added. They’re also naturally packed with Vitamins A and C, along with being low in sodium. And as you may have guessed, they’re vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Because we’re very proud of the fact that we’re able to offer something that’s both healthy and delicious, we want to highlight five different ways to make the most of those traits of our salsas: Marinade When people think of marinade, meat is often the first thing that comes to mind. And while our salsa is a great way to add flavor to any meat you may enjoy, marinade also works great for both grilled fish and veggies. Given that many of the marinades you’ll find on store shelves are packed with sugar and/or fat, any of our three salsas will be much healthier. Salad Dressing Of all the options we’re covering, this may be the simplest but most effective healthy use of salsa. The next time you make a salad, skip reaching for a bottle of dressing and instead spoon some salsa on top. Your taste buds and the rest of your body will thank you for doing so! Soup Base While tomato soup is delicious any time of the year, it’s especially tasty when the weather outside is cold. Unfortunately, many of the canned options on store shelves are packed with sodium and other preservatives. If you want to make this type of soup from scratch but are worried that the process is going to take too long, using salsa to kickstart the base of your soup is a great way to reduce the prep time required while simultaneously adding some serious flavor! Guacamole Want to whip up some guacamole that tastes just as good as anything you’d find at a restaurant? All you need is one of our salsas, a couple avocados, and a little lime juice. Mix them together, add pepper to taste and serve with your favorite brand of tortilla chips. Marinara or Cocktail Sauce Substitute If you want to add some heat to your pizza or pasta, using our InCindyary salsa in place of marinara will do the trick. And if you like shrimp cocktail but aren’t always crazy about the flavor of horseradish, substitute salsa in its place for a different flavor that still packs a punch. We hope you’re inspired to try one of these delicious ideas in your home! And if you have a healthy way that you enjoy salsa, be sure to share it with us by using the form at the top of our Salsa Stories page.

We’re officially in the midst of football season, which means lots of opportunities for having fun while watching games. If you want to really make the most of a Buckeyes or other game, it’s hard to beat the awesomeness of a great tailgate! Since there are a lot of ways to approach a tailgating party, I’ve put together a list of the top five tips I think are essential for hosting the perfect event: Make a List Even though the experience that people have at your tailgate party should be one of laid-back fun, there’s actually a lot that goes into pulling off this type of event. That’s why you can save yourself quite a bit of stress and scrambling around at the last minute by making a list. When you first start planning, you should get everything out of your head and onto your list. Then if your list ends up too cluttered or disorganized, you can take a second pass and get it all in a useful order. Choose the Right Types of Food When it comes to tailgating, food is really the star of this event. You want everyone who spends time with you to be able to enjoy some delicious options. Since the tricky part can be narrowing down to exactly which items you want to make and serve, one criterion you can use to guide your choices is size. Foods that are easy to pick up and snack on are ideal for this type of environment. And in terms of finding the right balance between guilty pleasure foods and healthier options, Mama Flasch’s salsas make that a breeze. Our InCindyary hot salsa packs a ton of flavor with just 15 calories per serving. Don’t Forget About Drinks While food is going to be the main attraction of your event, drinks are definitely important. In addition to bringing a variety that all of your guests will be able to enjoy, be sure you have a reliable way to keep them nice and cold throughout the day. The Right Seating is a Big Plus Chances are that people will be wandering around plenty during your tailgate. But there will also be times when you all want to hang out together. That’s where having the right seating becomes essential. By bringing plenty of seating that’s foldable and comfortable, you’ll have a great space where everyone wants to hang out for as long as possible. Bring It All Together Visually Decorations are the last piece to bringing together all the other elements we covered. This is also an area where you can have a lot of fun. Whether you go with a theme that’s based on team colors, the season, or a combination of things, let your creativity run wild. Although there’s definitely a lot to be said for being as close to the stadium where a game is taking place as possible, it’s worth mentioning that you can use these tips to host a tailgate party in a variety of other locations. So whether you’re right by the action or bring all this fun somewhere different, following the tips I covered above will make your event a big success! 6 Elements of a Successful School Fundraiser

According to PTO Today, school groups raise more than $1.5 billion every year selling various products. Although that huge amount may seem like a typo, it’s definitely billion with a b. While the opportunity presented by school fundraising is a very attractive one, it doesn’t mean raising a meaningful amount of money for very worthwhile initiatives like equipment or enriching field trips is easy. Since certain decisions and actions can mean the difference between mediocre results or a very successful fundraising campaign, I’ve used my extensive research and recent participation in this space to compile a list of the six essential elements of successful fundraising for a school: 1.   More Isn’t Always Better Research by PTO Today found that there are more than 2,000 fundraising companies in the US and Canada. All of these options can make it tempting to offer tons of products during a fundraiser. However, that approach can actually overwhelm prospects, which is why many of the best fundraising results come from much more focused campaigns. It’s also why our selection of three delicious salsas are perfect for a school fundraising campaign. 2.  Your Partner Can Make or Break Fundraising Efforts The right company and products can help your fundraiser exceed your expectations. On the other hand, the wrong partner can create a burden that’s nearly impossible to overcome despite your best efforts. So before you get persuaded by a slick pitch and big promises, take some time to do your research and think through all aspects of what’s being offered to you. 3.  Start Planning Now Given the number of pieces that have to be in place for a successful school fundraiser, it’s never too early to start gathering information and thinking through all the basics of your campaign. 4.  Know What You Want to Accomplish One of the most important things to pinpoint during the planning stage is exactly what needs to be accomplished with a fundraiser. By setting a clear goal that’s meaningful but still attainable, you’ll be able to set the stage for giving everyone something to rally around together. 5.  Get Everyone Involved Speaking of rallying around, the more you can get the entire school and community involved, the better. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure there’s alignment between what the fundraising is trying to accomplish and a core value of the school. 6.  Ending Doesn’t Mean It’s Over A common mistake that’s made in regards to school fundraisers is letting the momentum go away once a campaign ends. By making a point to engage in different follow-up activities like saying thanks to everyone who made the campaign a success, you can help carry the positive energy into future efforts. By taking each of the six elements above into careful consideration, you will have all the pieces in place needed to run a very successful fundraiser for your school. And if you’re interested in working with Mama Flasch’s Salsa on a fundraiser, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
